Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Sports development is a key component of social progress, contributing to physical health, community unity, and national pride. In Minna, the capital of Niger State, sports have long played a significant role in fostering local talent, promoting social cohesion, and encouraging physical activity. Over recent years, digital media has become a crucial tool in promoting sports development. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and sports-related apps enable athletes, coaches, and sports organizations to engage with a broader audience, raise awareness about local competitions, and provide access to training resources. Digital media has bridged the gap between the global sports community and local players, facilitating greater access to coaching, resources, and opportunities for young athletes. According to a study by Bello et al. (2024), the use of digital media in sports has led to increased participation and visibility for athletes, with the potential to foster talent development at the grassroots level. However, the extent of digital media’s effectiveness in promoting sports development at the local level in Minna remains underexplored. This study seeks to assess how digital media is contributing to sports development in Minna, examining both its opportunities and limitations.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although digital media has become a prominent tool in sports development globally, there is limited research on its impact at the local level in Minna, Niger State. While digital platforms have the potential to increase visibility for local sports, promote talent, and encourage community participation, it is unclear how effectively these platforms are being used to foster sports development. This study addresses the gap by assessing how digital media influences sports development, particularly in terms of talent identification, access to resources, and community engagement.
